I can argue my way out of getting raped.
It came in handy twice last summer.

?? …I start wondering in which area of the world you are actually living in? …If I would not know better, India would be my first guess!

Definitely not India. I grew up in Iowa, and now I live in the Chicago area. The good old United States of America is my home country.

Oh, I was aware of that from what I read until now …I wasn’t expecting that women in the US are so threatened to being raped. On the other hand, I know how careful women have to be in India.

It’s definitely a very large problem in India, but every part of the world is impacted by rape and rape culture. Whether it’s talked about or not. There is no country, culture, or socioeconomic background that is unscathed by this tragedy. It’s a big reason why I write/talk about it so much, is because people never think that a middle-class, white girl, privileged woman from the US, specifically the Midwest would have such a background. I want to show that everyone and anyone is impacted by it.

What you do in your blog and obviously in your real life, too, is very good. I have the feeling that the situation of women worldwide is getting worse instead of better. Maybe this feeling arises from the fact that information is nowadays easily accessible and spreads accross the world within fractions of a second, whereas one or two decases ago “things” could be kept local and hidden.
I do want to thank you for what you are doing. I see your fight for womens rights and for humanity. It makes me happy to see people like you blogging because it gives me the feeling our case is not lost.

Things aren’t getting worse for women. Things are getting better. Due to the internet and globalization, we are more aware of the injustices going on worldwide. In the first world, rape is no longer acceptable as a war tactic. It happens, but not as frequently. To my knowledge, the US has not made raping and pillaging a part of our military strategy. Compare that to 150 years ago, war wasn’t war without it. We’re making progress, but not fast enough.

I hope and think you are right about the war tactics of the US.
But the situation of women globally is in a bad condition. I have a female friend in India where are tendencies to oppress women are there and she is suffering. The last war in Europe (Yugoslav Wars 1991 to 2001) rape was a war tactic. In World War (1939 to 1945) rape was used as a war tactic. All current (civil) wars in Africa rape is used as a war tactic. ISIS in Syria and Iraq is using rape as a tactic.
I think it is good that women and men rase their voice agains dicrimination of women. It is necessary that the injustice against women is made public wherever and whenever it happens. It is equally important that everybody takes a stand. What makes me so angry is the silent majority in each society, which, by remaining silent and ignorant, approves the injustice that happens all around them.

That is why I clarified first world because the rest of the world is still using rape as a war tactic and it is terrible. But yes we need to start speaking, and that is the only way to end stereotyping and rape culture is through spreading awarenes..
